Tim Cook said he’s gay. In 29 states, you could be fired for doing the same


On Thursday, Apple [fortune-stock symbol=”AAPL”] chief executive officer Tim Cook confirmed what had long been believed: he is a gay man.

In coming out in Bloomberg Businessweek, Cook wrote, “Of course, I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky.”

That last statement is accurate, not just because of the prejudice that gay individuals face in their personal lives, but because of the lack of protections against the discrimination of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in the workplace.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, in 29 states workers can still be fired for saying exactly what Cook wrote Thursday. They include:

Animal Update: ‘National Feral Cat Day’

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— You probably didn’t know October 16th is National Feral Cat Day, but it is and its purpose is to acknowledge the humane efforts to reduce the feral cat population.

Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, co-president with the San Francisco SPCA said while there won’t be any parades, it is a day for those who work towards controlling and reducing the numbers of feral cats through humane non-lethal methods such as trap, neuter and release.

To clarify, a feral cat is a cat that is born outside away from people and has never been socialized away from humans or can also be one that has strayed or been released by a person and has reverted to a feral or wild state.

Daytripping and Observing Life

There will be a school bond measure on the ballot where I live in rural western Washington.  If it passes, local property taxes will increase by about $600 per year for the average home in this area, about a 33% increase.  In round numbers, the school board wants to spend $23,000,000 on improvements and upgrades to a high school that has 300 students.  When I first read about this, in a mailing sent out by the school district last spring, I was stunned.  Since then, there has not been an editorial in the local weekly newspaper.  No further mailings.  No campaigning.  Nothing.  I find that amazing.

People in Washington state vote by mail.  Ballots will be mailed out in a couple of weeks and the deadline for voters to mail them back is November 4.  Since voting can and does happen over a two-week period at the end of October…
